Every one of us eats too much at times. After all, what would the point of feasts be if it was not to stuff ourselves to the full? But at what point does a rare indulgence turns into a real continuing problem? Emotional eating and overeating is when you eat for reasons other than hunger as well as past the point of feeling full. People suffering with this eating disorder often tend to be overweight, and are typically aware themselves that their eating habits are unusual.

Emotional eating can be defined as an irrepressible urge for eating followed immediately or later by feelings of embarrassment and guiltiness.

But how do you know if anyone is a victim of this disorder? Or even you yourself are suffering from an overeating problem? Well, here are some signs which are very obvious in this disorder: -

Are you going on eating for no obvious reason?
Are you eating sensibly in front others and making up for it in seclusion?
Are you hiding your food?
Are you looking forward with anticipation and pleasure to the time when you can indulge in food alone?
Are you eating when you are not hungry?
Are you planning these secret binges well ahead of time?
But what are the reasons for which people overeat? Here are the top ten:

Boredom
Habit
Lack of willpower to quit
Glucose intolerance
Need of comfort
Lack of energy
Feeling deprived
Feeling disgust or hatred for one’s body
Feeling overwhelmed
Feeling upset

Whatever may be the reason for which a person is overeating, it may lead to a number of problems, including obesity, neural disorder, and cardiac trouble. These problems are even more terrible in case of teenagers and adolescents.

So, do not neglect overeating. Especially if you are a responsible parent; and be sure to consult a physician and dietician as soon as possible.
