Pageanting- does beauty deserve to be sorted?
While you are relaxed and have time for thought, go through this article.
Gone are those days, where they used to say- “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. The term is now ‘clichéd’ and the girls are measured and sorted on the basis of numbers to determine ‘how beautiful they are?’
Hundreds of girls, form each country walks the ramp each year, just to be sorted and numbered to be ‘officially beautiful’. They deprive themselves of nutrition to get to ‘size zero’ in other words, get anorexic and sick.
There have been numerous protests about this kind of ramps, and beauty shows and pageants which very obviously project women as nothing but sex objects. Many regard these shows and pageants as “cattle markets” where, according to them, women are exhibited like cattle in a marketplace.
The protests have been most vocal against the ‘swimsuit round’ of the pageant where the contestants wear nothing but swimwear and high heeled shoes. Some shows were even held at venues where the audience made vulgar comments at the contestants openly and tried to contact bodily.
Numerous debates and protests made the shows transferred to different venues, but the question remains- Does beauty really deserve to be sorted like this?
One may wonder that beauty which really has no definition and varies from person to person can really be held as an excuse to project the women as sex objects? And the pageants, which encourage more and more women to under-nourish themselves to attain a size zero figure, eventually to fall sick be termed legal anymore?
Let us look at beauty from a different angle. The beauty of the mind and the soul is equally important. Thinking healthy and reading good books can help the mind to get healthier. Nurturing positive thoughts is another beauty tip that makes a woman look more beautiful. Hence, with proper emphasis on health, mental health is something that cannot be ignored.
