September 24, 2008

I was troubled when my eleven year old daughter came up to me and told she would be dating someone. She was in her seventh grade only and she hardly knew what dating meant. But anyway I kept it all to myself and told nothing when she said she would be out to lunch with her new boyfriend that next afternoon. He gave her a beautiful little apple pendant on a chain which was adorable. The next day when I went to pick my daughter up from school, she complained of nausea and stomach ache. I soon found that she had broken up with her boyfriend within twenty four hours of their first date. The boy, she complained had cried a lot but by daughter told him plainly that she wasn’t interested. I was a bit taken aback by the precision with which she expressed her own self and there was something in her that made me trust her.

We had a small discussion on how to be kind to others and respect the feelings of others. Splitting up did not necessarily mean severing all relationships. My daughter gave me brilliant answers and I was surprised at how much she knew at her age! I felt instantly that she should be allowed to develop her own thoughts and moral feelings. She has grown up to be a responsible young lady and her first date is a good friend of her even now. They have graduated from college together.

It is very important to let your children grow up into responsible individuals. It is important to be by their sides but not always intrude into their feelings and expressions that would hinder them from taking responsible judgment.  We can be there to teach them good or bad, right or wrong. We, parents often forget about the clear line of demarcation where we should intrude and where we should leave them to work things out on their own. However, the discipline and rules should be carefully maintained ever since childhood.
