Your belly is one of the most important parts of your body which causes severe problems at times. If you have a flat belly, it adds to your personality. But if your belly is abnormally big i.e. a pot belly, it is really a matter of concern for you. As per the report published in the March 26, 2008, online issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, the person with larger belly in the 40s is very much likely to become the victim of dementia in their age of 70s.

As it is much talks and discussions about the reason that causes the pot belly tells clearly that it happens due to excessive amount of fat in your body. The fat increases the risk of calcium and plaque build-up in the arteries of the heart. According to the study, you must maintain the ratio of belly than to your hips (this ratio is known as ‘waist-to-hip-ratio’). This may also be the possible indications of overweight and obesity.

Now the question is why does your belly fat matter more than the cellulite of your thighs or hips? As a matter of fact stated by most of the medical journals, the abdominal fat causes more concerns than the fats of the thighs or the hips and that has a direct relationship with dementia. Therefore, it is very important for everyone to keep attention towards the waist-to-hip-ratio. Though it is very simple, it is very important. Just do the following steps and know the most important statistics of your body:

1. Stand straight, take a measuring tape and measure your waist at its smallest point or at your navel. Do not hold on or push out your belly.
2. After this, measure your hips from the widest area.
3. At last divide the measurement of your waist by the measure of your hip. Calculate and find out the ratio by yourself.

The ideal or free from risk waist-to-hip-ratio:

* For Men, it should be 0.9 or less,
* For women, it should be 0.8 or less
* Anything 1.0 or more than that is considered “at risk.”

If you are really serious about avoiding this situation, try to lose one inch or more than that off your waist and feel the difference within yourself. It is good to know that even the smallest of improvements proves to be beneficial for the person concerned.
