Restless Leg Syndrome
RLS or restless leg syndrome is a discomfort felt in the legs and also in the arms. This condition or symptom decreases somewhat when the person moves his arms of legs. There is temporary relief as the person moves his limbs. RLS causes a disturbance during sleep that causes tiredness and fatigue and hampers usual life and living.
Almost twelve million Americans have RLS. The disorder is undiagnosed in many patients. The problems in the leg that a person experiences are painful sensations, aching, burning, tingling, itching, pulling, crawling and creeping. Others feel it arises deep from within the leg. This is more common in women than in men.
There are two major RLS syndromes.
One is the primary syndrome of restless legs. This is caused due to unknown factor. This is condition that continues all throughout life and progresses over the time.
There is also the secondary restless legs syndrome. This results from pregnancy or from diabetes, fibromyalgia. This could be a side effect of certain medications.
More than eighty per cent of the people having RLS also face a disorder in limb movement. This is a condition in which the person’s leg jerks or twists from ten seconds to full one minute at a stretch.
The experts are of opinion that RLS may be the cause of chemical imbalance in the brain. The chemical is called dopamine. This chemical is said to pass on signals in different parts of the brain to control the movement of muscles. Stress also plays a great role in causing RLS. This is also caused due to the gene factor. People whose father or mother has this symptom have a greater risk of having this disease.
The use of medicines like antipsychotics, antidepressants, anti-nausea drugs, antihistamines and allergy medications triggers of the occurrence of RLS. Use of excessive alcohol, tobacco or caffeine will make the symptoms of RLS worse.
