Spotting During Pregnancy – A Brief Overview
During pregnancy your body will go through a tremendous set of changes to help your baby grow inside you. Use this pregnancy timeline to find out how your body will change and how your baby will grow, as well as what you should be doing when.
Spotting is very light bleeding. About a quarter of all pregnant women experience spotting at some point in pregnancy. It is similar to what you may experience at the beginning or end of your pregnancy. The color can vary from light pink to brown.
There are a variety of reasons for spotting during pregnancy. Some are normal and turn out to be no cause for alarm. At other times, spotting can indicate a problem with the pregnancy. To be on the safe side, you should call your doctor or midwife right away whenever you experience spotting during pregnancy.
A little spotting does take place sometimes when the embryo implants itself in the uterus, but this is fairly rare, and the spotting is very little, lasting just for a couple of days. So if you find that you have missed a period and have had a couple of days spotting and no incidents of spotting after this, there is little cause for worry. But if you find that the spotting has lasted longer, you should consult your gynaecologist without delay.
Bleeding during early pregnancy is fairly common, with about 1 in 4 women experiencing early signs of pregnancy during their first trimester. If you are early in your pregnancy and have noticed some vaginal bleeding, you may think you have gotten your period. This blood is not your period, but, in fact, is due to some other cause.
There are a number of ways to determine whether you are simply experiencing normal spotting during pregnancy, or if it may be something more. Always consult a doctor any time you experience anything out of the norm, and especially if you have any concerns about spotting during your pregnancy.
Typically, spotting during pregnancy will present as a darker, brownish color, or possibly a light pink. This color generally means that what you are experiencing is normal spotting.
