Swollen eyes and eye infection
If eyes are swollen, red and itchy, our day to day activities come to a standstill. The problem may be an infection of the eyes which should not be left undiagnosed and subsequently, untreated. There may be broad spectrum of reasons behind eye infection or swelling, which could hamper vision leading to permanent eye impairment even. Conjunctivitis is a common eye infection. The eyes swell, become red, watery, sticky or itchy and feel gritty. One or both the eyes may be infected. Treatment should be done to avoid permanent damage. The causes for conjunctivitis are classified into four major groups, namely, (1) Allergic Reactions (2) Auto immunity (3) Eye Infection (4) Irritation. Hay fever, caused by pollens, dust, cosmetics, animal secretions or solutions for contact lens causes allergic conjunctivitis. Here, antihistamine tablets or eye drops is to be used as anecdote. Sometimes, other diseases can trigger autoimmune responses of eyes, as in case of rheumatoid arthritis or inflamed bowel or gonorrhea, making the eyes red and swollen. This kind of eye infection is generally treated with the help of steroids such as Corticosteroids, either in tablets or drop form. But proper diagnosis is to be made before applying steroids as they can make these infections drastically worse.
Microbes such as bacteria (streptococci, staphylococci etc.), viruses (herpes, adenovirus) or Chlamydia can infect eye. Chlamydia, cross between virus and bacteria can cause Trachoma, which causes scarring of conjunctiva and blindness all over the world, especially in UK where neonatal babies are affected. These are treated with antibiotics in the form of creams, tablets and drops or antivirus for viral infection. So, treatment is decided by the causal factor of an infection. Whatever might be reason behind your tearful and swollen eyes, proper care and medication with nutritional supplements would definitely protect your most precious eyes.
