Taking Care of Your Heart
July 6, 2009
The proverb runs like this, “Home is where the Heart is”. Literally as well a healthy heart is a by product of a healthy lifestyle, and vice versa.
Biologically speaking the heart’s an organ consisting of involuntary muscles that work on their own without any physical intervention: a wonder of nature. This organ is present in all living beings with the vertebral column known as “the vertebrates”. It is responsible to pump blood through the “blood vessels” by recurring, rhythmic contractions.
The human heart beats at the rate of seventy two beats per-minute. A splendid occurrence to be noted is that this organ beats at an approximation of two and a half billion times in a lifetime, which is around sixty six years, and weighing an average of two hundred fifty to three hundred grams and three hundred to three fifty grams in females and males respectively.
This important life giving organ however needs special care from our end to last longer so as to help us live longer. Some fatal or malicious sources which can cause harm to our heart are high blood-pressure, obesity, and elevated cholesterol level.
Heart disease can be blamed to be the foremost cause of fatality, and sadly the top of the list reason of demise in the Western World.
This is a high time to recollect the old axiom “prevention is better than cure”. This part of our body is sensible and primary enough to demand a maximum care of it. A good care will be preventing any heart diseases to approach us at all.
Some questions that need to be answered are:
-Can we avoid cardiac diseases?
-If yes then how?
-What are the methods to prevent such diseases from occurring?
Let’s go one by one with these queries
Yes cardiac diseases can be avoided, if not one hundred percent, then at least by a fair percentage. Why, because these diseases can also occur at time due to mere genetic disorders. But the occurrence of the disease due to life-style disorder can definitely be subsided to a fairly huge measure. This disease although at times happens due to other causes, but it major occurrence is because of the questionable stress in lifestyle. The prevention of a cardiovascular disease is not completely difficult. All it requires is to be sensible with a combination of the right life style preferences.
Let’s discuss how we prevent cardiovascular diseases
-We have to follow a diet low in cholesterol and fat by limiting the fat intake and increase consumption of low-fat foods. Including a whole lot of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, with a constant vigil on limiting the margarine, pastries, and high in fat, dairy products intake.
-Have to monitor the cholesterol levels. Visiting a physician at a regular basis for the check up of the right balance of the HDL and the LDL levels, so as to ensure that the HDL or good-cholesterol level is higher than the LDL or bad-cholesterol level is needed.
-Maintenance of a proper weight, well below the obesity level is required. One should be consulting a physician if they are obese and facing constraints to lose weight.
-A regular exercise regimen should be followed. It is suggested to exercise for at least a total of forty minutes if not more, each week.
-We need to keep any diabetic conditions present, if any, under strict control. A regular checkup of the blood-sugar levels should be done if suspected to have diabetes.
