Pregnancy is a happy season in a woman’s life. It is a time when the would-be mother is nourished properly with food and nutrition and proper medicines so that her body is all prepared to welcome the child. Along with medicines, recent research has shown the use of herbs to have positive effects on the child bearing mother. One such herb is the Shepherd’s Purse which is a weed that grows to almost twenty inches high. It has pods that are heart shaped that grows near the top. It is found to grow in the sunny regions of the United States. The plant has anti-haemorrhagic qualities and helps in constriction of the veins and the coagulation of the blood vessels.

Dating back to history, the juice of this plant was used for stopping a nose bleed. It also increased urine and the flow of menstrual blood. On the other hand, it causes uterine contractions and stops bleeding. The chopped pant is steeped in water for an hour to bring out the medicinal properties of the herb.

The leaves of this herb provide us with calcium while bleeding can be controlled following a miscarriage. To control bleeding after child birth a twenty to forty drops would help and it can work if it is administered in tincture combination. This is also recommended with Blue Cohosh Tea for breastfeeding and better nutrition. This herb extract, 3 drops of tincture, can also be given to the newborn.

For making a tincture at home, the plant should be pricked immediately before tincturing as this herb would lose out on all its medicinal qualities as soon as it dries up. If the herb, Shepherd’s Purse is used for a post partum haemorrhage, care should be taken as it can cause clots and also prevent the clamping of the uterus and also contraction of the uterus can happen from continuous bleeding.
