Ways to Prevent Diabetes
Diabetes is one of the biggest killers in the world. Over a million people die every year due to various problems caused by diabetes in the world. Even a bigger number of people suffer paralysis, heart attacks and amputations due to negligence in care of diabetes patients. Thus, it is extremely important for us to prevent this problem.
Diabetes is of two types- Type1 and Type2. Type1 diabetes is mostly a genetic problem and most patients develop it at early stages of their life. This type of diabetes is unpreventable and the patient has to take insulin all his life. Type2 diabetes on the other hand, is caused by an unhealthy lifestyle and bad eating habits. We can prevent this type of diabetes by taking good care of ourselves.
The most important way to prevent Type2 diabetes is by taking a healthy diet. The modern lifestyle has made us a slave of junk food that’s high in sugar content. These foods have a very low glycemic index which raises our blood sugar very quickly, only to bring it back to an even lower level than before. Thus, eliminate junk and processed food from your diet and take meals which are rich in vegetables, fiber and complex carbohydrates.
Exercising regularly also helps us prevent diabetes. An active lifestyle helps our body in managing our blood sugar better. By regular work outs you will also be able to reduce extra weight which helps in preventing diabetes. You must do at least 30 minutes of light workout at least three times a week.
Most people hate going to doctors for regular check-ups and think it is a waste of time. But you must realize that this “waste of time” may save your life. Therefore, go for regular check-ups which will help you keep your body in shape and your chances of getting diabetes will reduce considerably.
Few decades ago, diabetes patients were mostly from the age group of over 50 years old. But today, type 2 diabetes is most prevalent in the people below the age of 45 years. These are alarming signs and we must take all the required steps to prevent this disease.
