Many of you would-be moms or new moms are not aware of the term Diastasis. It is the separation of the rector abdominis outer muscle that occurs only during pregnancy. You can check for this in your body after you give birth or before that. You can lie with the knees bent, on the back and with the feet on the floor in a very flat position. The finger tips should be placed two inches above the level of the naval. As you lift the head slowly exhale. If this area is gently pressed, then you can feel a 3 fingers width or a soft area in the middle. This is referred to as diastasis. After checking is done you have to move to one side. Then you can use your arms to push up in a seated position. When you feel dizzy, if you feel it that way, then roll to your side. You should not remain in a lying position for more than ten seconds.

If you are having diastasis, you should avoid the twisting exercises and draw the naval to the spine before you can get up from a sitting position or lift objects. You can try splinting too so that the separation does not get larger.

Do you know how to splint during a diastasis? A splint is a piece of cloth that keeps the two halves of the outer muscles of the abdomen while you do the exercises. It also prevents a diastasis from happening and avoids the separation. You can take a strong piece of fabric, which is six to nine inches wide. You can wrap the piece of cloth around the lower part of your back and hold a part of the cloth in your hand. You should not make a knot. Bring the hand to your body and pull while you rest the hand on the abdomen. Put the left hand to the right side.  You can pull on both sides towards the bellybutton and hold it while you do the exercises.
