Women’s Health and Pranayama
Breathing is the most vital function of our body. In Indian traditional Yoga, the most important aspect of exercise is the Breathing Exercise or Pranayama, which helps right breathing. From a Yogic point, correct breathing is to convey more oxygen to the bloodstream in addition to the brain; and to control the fundamental life energy or Prana. Pranayama Yoga also incorporates with the Asanas or the right posture with the body. The union of these two brings purification and self-discipline, upholding both mind and body.
There are several beneficial effects of Pranayama, some of them are listed below:
* Pranayama is known to strengthen the immune system.
* It steadies and calms the mind.* It also increases VO2 Max (the oxygen usage efficiency of the body)
* Pranayama can effectively lower or raise blood pressure.
* Pranayama is also known to improve and concentration and mental capacity.
However, at certain points of time; people, especially women should be careful about using this breathing technique. Women who are having a baby should particularly avoid any of the breathing techniques which can put too much pressure on the lower abdominal or pelvic cavity.
Women who are in the menstruating period may also choose to eliminate these breathing techniques also. It is recommended for the women who already have some concerns about their periods, should consult their doctors of medicine before starting these breathing exercises; while the other women may begin them in a more gentle fashion. Try it for shorter times, and less vigorously than usual. It is always better to judge how it affects your cramping and flow.
Pranayama is the part of yoga that teaches us proper and deep breathing techniques for optimum health and self-realization. But these Yogas are very powerful. Venture into them with caution as well as respect, along with curiosity.
