Women’s Peripheral Artery Disease Tied to Secondhand Smoke
Women who are exposed to second hand smoke has a risk of sixty seven per cent of PAD or Peripheral Artery Disease compared to those who were not exposed at all. The bad effects of Peripheral art disease have been researched on in several universities of the world. 1209 Chinese women of 60 years were examined and these women never smoked. These women when they were exposed to smoke had an increased risk of heart disease and the risk of ischemic stroke by fifty six percent. The Ischemic stroke is the result of the blockage that cuts off the supply of blood to the brain.
Second hand exposure to smoke is defined as the exposure to the smoke emanated from tobacco for 15 minutes everyday in the workplace and also at home. Out of the examined women, 271 were PAD cases, coronary disease cases were 431, stroke cases were 172 and ischemic stroke was 109.
In the journal Circulation, these findings were first recorded. This study establishes that detrimental effect that passive smoking causes on women. It leads to stroke and heart disease in majority of non smokers who are exposed. Frank Hu the professor of epidemiology and nutrition in the Harvard School of Public Health has expressed this in a new release. It is very easy for a woman to get exposed to such smoke while at home, while travelling to work or even while in the presence of office colleagues and friends. Though this study was mainly conducted with a focus on men non smoker men also fall a victim to this.
It is best to create an awareness among men and women about the bad effects of passivce smoking on them and take precautions accordingly. This can be done by going off from the company of smokers while they smoke, wearing masks on the nose and mouth in crowded roads and while commuting. Creating awareness is a good step so that people are aware of it and can keep the smoke to themselves.
