Working After Child Birth
Immediately after childbirth it is really difficult to get back to normal working life. You need to take care of your health, look after your child and there are so many other additional responsibilities. A full time work at this juncture may strain your family life. It becomes all the more difficult in case you are still breastfeeding.
Ideally an employee should return to the position she held prior to the taking of leave. If that is not possible, at least a comparable position should be assigned to her. But at times this is found to be difficult and a request for a part time job may be turned down by your employer. Herein, the point of discrimination inevitably comes in. A few family-friendly alternatives are listed below.
Part time work
Part time work is a good solution as it helps you to give more time to your child and earn at the same time. Most women go for it. A permanent part time job also entitles you to sick leaves and yearly leave credits.
Casual work
This kind of work does not have any fixed work schedule. Women do it just to tackle the child care costs. This is not a regular work and hence do not expect sick leaves or annual leaves.
Work from home
This era of information technology has given us the scope for providing services all over the globe without even crossing the threshold of the house. Thanks to the World Wide Web, the telephones, computer etc which helps to create a virtual office at home. You can also go for it.
Flexible hours
You can work for a few hours per day depending upon your convenience over a specific period of time.
Job sharing
Instead of loading yourself with a full time work, you can share it with another person. This enables you to work for half a week or may be during the peak hours daily as per the agreement suiting your needs.
Flexible leave
If your employer is willing and understanding, you can negotiate with him/her so that you can use your assigned annual leave with suitable flexibility. Additional leave-without-pay provisions are also there in some companies.
