One of the side-effects of Chemotherapy/Radiation, especially of the neck and head malignancies is mucositis. The therapies used to manage cancer can lead to various changes in the body-chemistry, which may result in diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, pain, loss of appetite and mucositis.
There is weight loss due to loss of appetite (due to fewer intake of calories). There is loss of strength and muscle mass and other complications, which hinders the medical treatment and impedes effective therapy. There is decreased immunity, poor tolerance towards surgery, altered efficacy of radiotherapy and chemotherapy due to mucositis. A study was conducted with an objective to reduce the radiation induced xerosteomia, skin reaction and mucositis etc with the Ayurvedic formulation of Yashtimadhu Ghrita (the processed ghee).
A group of 75 patients were divided randomly in 4 smaller groups and were given the products containing licorice. In Group A patients, Honey and Yashtimadhu powder were applied in the oral-cavity for a couple of minutes before they underwent radiotherapy. They were also given Yashtimadhu Ghrita orally. In Group B patients only honey and Yashtimadhu powder was applied in the oral-cavity. Only honey was applied in the oral-cavity in Group C patients. Group D patients were on conventional medications. The entire group of patients received both Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy for maximum 7 weeks duration.
Skin reactions and Mucositis were noticed in 100% patients at varying levels. The trial product reduced the intensity of Chemotherapy and Radiation induced mucositis. The results proved that Yastimadhu could be effectively used in diminishing the risk of oral-mucositis following Chemo and Radiation therapies in cancer patients, especially on the neck and head region.
