Research

Horny Goat Weed is an herb that belongs to the Epimedium species. Epimedium is also referred as bishop’s hat, rowdy lamb herb, fairy wings, barrenwort, yin yang huo or randy beef grass. It is widely grown in the southern regions of China. It is also grown in many Asian countries that border China and some of the European countries as well. It is extensively used in the Traditional Chinese Medicine. The raw leaves of the plant could be eaten as it is. However, the extraction of this herbal plant is sold as pills or powder.

The healing potential of this herb comes from its leaves, which contain sterols, icariin, flavonoids and other substances. In the studies, icariin has not shown an increase in the testosterone levels in women. However, Icaritin and Desmethylicaritin – the two compounds found in Horny Goat Weed increased estrogen level in post-menopausal women. This shows that the herb is beneficial as an aphrodisiac for both the genders. The increase in gender-specific hormone is beneficial for men as well as women.

Maca

Maca is one of the beneficial herbal plants grown widely in Peru and other South American countries. It is known as the virility root crop. It is also referred to as Peruvian ginseng because it provides ginseng like effects such as improving an individual’s libido, strength and sexual health.

Scientists have identified this herb as lepidium meyenii. The root can be dried and stored for almost 7-years without losing its effectiveness. During the process of researching and cultivating Maca, laboratory and social scientists have found out the well-developed agricultural methods followed by the primeval Peruvians. They cultivated maca almost 2000 years ago.

Maca absorbs all the nutrients in the soil and hence rich in minerals, fatty acids and essential vitamins, which are reasons for the curative powers of this herb. It can even grow at an altitude of 14,500 feet, where the atmosphere lacks oxygen and it is extremely cold. This is probably the reason why this herb is potent even now, as it was during ancient times.

Scientists discovered the usefulness of maca in enhancing fertility in the year 1961 after a series of laboratory studies. The study used impotent rats and showed that their fertility increased after taking maca. Researchers attribute maca’s libido enhancing effect to its nutrient and protein content. Many of the functions in the body including fertility and sexual functions require amino acids and maca has about 10% of it. Noradrenaline and dopamine, the two neurotransmitters need amino acids such as phenylalanine and histidine to pass on the signals to the nervous system in the body. This is required to process sexual stimulation during intercourse. These amino acids are found in the Maca Root.

Arginine is another essential amino acid, which plays a critical role in counteracting impotence in men. Also, arginine increases sperm production and its motility. This ingredient is found in many of the sexual wellness supplements available in the market these days. Experts have confirmed the vasodilating property of this compound, which is accountable for the enhanced flow of blood to penis. Maca is a very good source of the amino acid – Arginine.

Both private and government sectors have been closely researching on the various health benefits of this herb. Besides stimulating libido, maca is also effectual in reducing menopause symptoms in women. It is also useful in curing various health conditions including prostate cancer.

In 2004 April, a group of individuals, who were led by the executive director of the Prostrate Awareness Foundation took part in the Prostate Cancer Hike to Mt. Kilimanjoro. The group proved the efficiency of Maca in improving their endurance levels during the trek to the summit at 19,341 feet, as everyone were able to climb to the top.

The amazing effect noticed about maca was on patients suffering from prostate cancer, who were on ADT or Androgen Deprivation Therapy. The Therapy reduces the levels of androgen, as it stimulates the development of cancer cells in prostate. This effect was supposed to affect the patient’s libido. However, when the patients took maca supplements, they reported improved libido. This has further encouraged the laboratory research on the usefulness of maca on people with prostate cancer.

While people around the world are scampering to unbolt the benefits of maca in recuperating sexual wellness, the medical world is equally hoping that maca could be a remedy to alleviate prostate cancer. National Cancer Institute has granted almost 1.7 million dollars to the Pittsburgh’s University of Cancer Institute in order to study the effects of broccoli, watercress and maca root on prostate cancer.

In another study conducted by the scientist, Gustavo Gonzales from the University of Cayetano Heredia in Peru has confirmed that maca can boost the sexual drive of a person by almost 200 percent. It was proved to be a stimulant and the nine-month trial also showed to improve the libido by almost 200%. Also, the sperm production was doubled.

The Asian Periodical of Andrology was the first one to publish the studies conducted on the libido enhancing powers of maca. The sexual benefits of this herb are an icing on the cake, as it is known to heal other conditions too such as anxiety, stress, blood pressure etc.
