Morpheme Gymnema Slyvestre (Meshshringi)
- Reviews (2)
Gymnema is known as ‘sugar destroyer’ in Ayurveda. Gymnemic Acids is the key component of the plant, which mimics the molecules of the glucose and numbs the receptor areas on the tongue. Besides Gymnemic acids, it also contains Beta-Amyrin, Stigmasterol, Lupeopl and Quercitor. All these compounds work synergistically and help the body in maintaining healthy blood glucose levels.
Gymnema Sylvestre has been viewed as very safe herb for adults at suggested doses. If a person is pregnant or lactating, she should not take this herb due to lack of research and potential impact on the fetus. Those people who have allergies to the milkweed family may experience allergic reactions to Gymnema sylvestre too. As always, one should check with a doctor before beginning a new health routine, particularly if one is diabetic or prone to issues involving blood glucose.
How to use
Morpheme Gymnema can be taken as per the recommendation of a doctor. You need to take the capsules after the meals. The recommended dosage for adults is 1 – 2 capsules. You can take the pills either with milk or water.
How Gymnema Slyvestre is Useful?
Gymenma Sylvestre is a climbing, woody plant and is native to India. It is known by the common name of ‘Gurmar’. The plant contains saponins, quercitol, stigmasterol, gymnemic acids and derivatives of amino acid- betaine, trimethylamine and choline. Gymnema is an astringent, refrigerant, tonic, diuretic and stomachic. Various studies found that the plant increased the output of urine and decreased hyperglycemia in both human and animal studies.
The animal studies conducted on beryllium-nitrate & streptozotocin diabetic rats found that Gymnema extracts almost doubled the beta cells, which secrete insulin in the pancreas. This helped in returning the glucose level in the blood to normal.
Gymnema side effects and safety
A study conducted, which was conducted on rats for one year did not exhibit any toxicity. Limited study on humans has also confirmed that it is safe to use for about one or two years. The Ayurvedic experts, who have extensive knowledge and experience with Gymnema sylvestre have not come across any key side-effects of using this herb. A dietary toxicity study was conducted on Wistar rats by the scientists in Tokyo, Japan. The rats were administered the leaf extract of Gymnema Sylvestre for 52 weeks.
This oral repeated dose-toxicity was carried out in both genders of the rats. The Wistar rats were given a graded dosage of the herbal plant at 0.01%, 0.10% and 1% of basal-powder diet and another group was fed only on the basal-powder-diet (without gymnema). The rats were subjected to intermediate examination at 26 weeks and final examination at 52 weeks. They were subjected to pathological examination, serum chemistry and hematology.
None of these rats died during this period. There were no changes in the hematological examination, food consumption, body weight or in serum biochemical examination. In addition, there were no alterations in histopathology.

Diabetes – symptoms and complications
Noticeable symptoms might be absent in type-2 diabetes for several years. It is only after a blood test that a person comes to know that he/she is suffering from diabetes mellitus. However, the symptoms develop as the blood glucose level rises in the blood.
Excessive thirst and urination are common symptoms of diabetes mellitus. In insulin resistant diabetes, pancreas secretes excess insulin to enable the body cells to absorb the glucose from the blood. The hormone insulin also triggers hunger. Excess hunger and increased eating is a common symptom of type-2 diabetes. Losing sugar through excess urination and inability to process calories from foods might lead to unintended weight loss.
Uncontrolled diabetes slows down the wound healing process. Prolonged elevated blood sugar level weakens the immune system, increasing the risk of infections.Diabetics have a higher risk of developing retinal problems.
Glucose is the main source of fuel for the body. When the body fails to absorb glucose from the blood, it starts to break down the fats to meet its energy requirement. Fat metabolism forces the body to spend excess energy, leading to fatigue. Extreme lethargy could be a sign of diabetes.
If left untreated, diabetes mellitus increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and neurological problems.
The fat reducing capacity
Along with a healthy and proper diet and exercise, Gymnema sylvestre may be a helpful addition to the weight-management plan in people suffering from obesity. One should note that the herb builds up in the system over a few weeks time becoming more effective. Since it is advocated that Gymnema sylvestre must be taken with each meal, it is better to get a lower-mg capsule that can be taken thrice a day to reach the full daily suggested dose.
Tips to improve glycemic control
For better glycemic control, besides ingesting antidiabetic drugs and supplements, you should adopt a healthy lifestyle. A healthy diet could reduce risk of hyperglycemia and other complications induced by the health disorder. A diet low in simple sugar and saturated fats and high in dietary fiber rich fruits, vegetables and grains could help in averting abnormal fluctuations in the blood sugar level.
Regular exercises could protect you from the complications of diabetes. Moderate physical activities such as brisk walking for 20 minutes, at least thrice a week, are beneficial for diabetics. However, the actual level of physical activities would depend upon your health condition.
Diabetics should limit alcohol intake. Alcohol consumption might lead to abnormal changes in the blood sugar level in type-2 diabetes patients. It increases the triglyceride level in the blood and induces nerve pain. Diabetics should limit intake of alcoholic beverages to less than seven drinks a week. On a single day, they should not take more than three drinks.
Diabetics should quit smoking. Smoking damages the blood vessels and worsens the diabetes related complications.
