GOODNESS OF WHEATGRASS
Wheatgrass is a rich source of several nutrients and is one of the healthy and potent substances with multiple benefits. Biologically known as Triticum aestivum, the plant contains enzymes such as Super Oxide Dismutase (SOD), transshydrogenase, cytrochrome, lipase, amylase and protease. Besides these enzymes, the herbal plant also contains amino acids like serine, arginine, asparatic acid, glutamic acid and alanine, which provide plenty of proteins to the body. Wheatgrass contains huge amounts of chlorophyll and has a wide-range of health promoting effects. Due to its varied composition, it is considered to be a ’Superfood’. Wheat grass is generally taken in the form of juice or powder. It can either be consumed orally or as an enema. The health benefit of wheatgrass extract and its juice has been confirmed in various studies.
BENEFITS OF WHEATFRASS
The extract of this herb has been proved clinically to support recovery from ulcerative colitis and is considered beneficial for patients with breast cancer who are undergoing chemotherapy. Various health advocates have lauded the health benefits of this herbal plant for many years. Recently, a placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized clinical study was carried out to prove scientifically the effectiveness of the extract obtained from the herbal plant. A research article published in the ‘Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology’ in the year April 2002 reported that the patients, who were diagnosed clinically with distal-ulcerativ-colitis, were given 100 cc of the extract or a placebo. This was continued for a month and the participants maintained a diary. The clinicians examined the changes in patients. After the completion of the study, it was noted that all the patients showed significant decrease in disease activity.
HOW IS WHEATGRASS USEFUL
It was concluded by the researchers that the antioxidant properties in the wheat grass juice is effective in improving the symptoms of ulcerative colitis. Wheat grass juice was given to those breast cancer patients, who were undergoing chemotherapy to observe whether the juice might reduce myelotoxicity. The bone suppression is known as Myelotoxicity. In this condition, the cells that are responsible for delivering oxygen, blood clotting and immunity are decreased drastically. This condition is life threatening. The patients were split into control and intervention groups. The patients in control group did not receive the juice, whereas the patients in intervention group were given wheatgrass juice of 60 cc. However, because of ‘censoring events’, about 50% of the people in control group could not finish the study and 16.67% of patients who were given wheatgrass juice could not complete the study.
HELPFUL FOR OVERALL
The patients in control group were largely ‘censored’ due to WBC counts. The patients who took wheat grass were ‘censored’ due to increase in queasiness. Based on these results, researchers concluded that wheatgrass juice might be able to decrease myelotoxicity, even while the patient is undergoing chemotherapy. Research has also proved that wheatgrass juice can speed up the process of healing, when it is applied to burn and surgical wounds. This study is of special relevance to those, who are sensitive to antibiotic-ointments or they are in countries, where antibiotics are costly for routine use. The extract of wheatgrass provides an effective choice to topical antibiotics.
DIRECTION FOR USE
Take 1 Veg Capsule 1-2 Times a Day after meals or as directed by healthcare professional.
Are the wheatgrass capsules safe to use?Being an herbal product, the capsules are completely safe and do not have any side effects. Besides, they are not habit-forming.
I am allergic to wheat, is it safe for me to use wheatgrass? In most of the cases, it is safe to use. Wheat allergies normally occur due to gluten and this comes from the wheat seed. The extract of wheatgrass is obtained from young sprouts of the plant before the new seed is formed. Thus, wheatgrass capsules do not contain gluten and is safe to use. However, if you are worried about wheat allergy, it is recommended to consult an allergist/nutritional consultant or doctor before taking these supplements.
Do the wheatgrass supplements deliver similar results as the fresh juice of wheatgrass? The wheatgrass capsules contain 25 percent extra antioxidants than an equal amount of freshly obtained juice from wheatgrass. Therefore, the capsules are more effective.
How long it takes to notice the results?Wheatgrass supplements contain 100% pure extract of this herbal plant. You can notice the results in about 4 to 6 weeks, as the outcome depends on various factors.

ResearchWeakened immune system and risk of diseases
The human body is the ideal place for the growth and development of germs. Every day millions of microorganisms are entering our body through the nose and mouth. The immune system is engaged in continuous battles against the invading microorganisms. As long as we are blessed with a strong immune system, we lead a healthy life. Infections occur, when the microbes overpower the immune system. Hence, a strong immune system is necessary for healthy living.
The immune system comprises of white blood cells, proteins and organs. White blood cells or leukocytes protect the body from infections. There are two types of lymphocytes – lymphocytes and phagocytes. The T lymphocytes are the killer cells of the body and the B-lymphocytes produce antibodies to destroy the foreign substances. The phagocytes digest and eliminate the invading organisms from the body.
Your immune system might be damaged by several factors. Oxidative stress might interfere with immune function, reducing the ability of the immune cells to ward off infections. Even emotional stress might slow down the activities of the immune cells. To speed up the recovery process during illnesses, it is necessary to reduce emotional stress, anxiety and depression.
Advanced age weakens the immune system, which makes elderly people susceptible to infections. The exact association between aging and reduced immune response is unclear. However, aging seems to decrease T cell production, probably by decreasing the function of the thymus gland, which houses the mature T cells. By destroying the T cells, HIV virus damages the immune system, making the body vulnerable to severe infections.
Oxidative stress caused by the harmful activities of free radicals might intervene with the functioning of the immune system.
How wheat grass is good for the health
Wheat grass is used as a general health tonic. It could improve the overall quality of the health. It is packed with essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids. It is one of the richest sources of beta-carotene, vitamins B12, C and E. It contains iron, magnesium, calcium, phosphorous and potassium. For vegetarians, wheatgrass is one of the best sources of proteins. The nutrients in wheatgrass account for its therapeutic properties.
How to strengthen the immune system naturally
To improve the functions of the immune cells naturally, you should include fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidant nutrients. Although all fruits and vegetables contain antioxidant vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals, some plant foods are especially rich in antioxidant compounds. Yellow, orange, dark green and red colored fruits and vegetables could supply your body beta-carotene that is noted for its powerful antioxidant property. Beta-carotene is a precursor of vitamin A. In the human body, it is converted into vitamin A. Vitamin A is linked to production of B cells, T cells and cytokines.
A vitamin C rich diet could boost the activities of the immune cells and increase their ability to fight cold, flu and other infections. Orange, lime, grapefruit, berries, kiwi, mango, nectarine, tomato and peppers are rich sources of vitamin C. Vitamin C is believed to coordinate the activities of micronutrients that help to improve immune function.
Vitamin E, which is touted to be one of the most powerful antioxidants in nature, is present in nuts, whole grains, sunflower seeds, green leafy vegetables, carrot, papaya and broccoli. Vitamin E also helps to improve the antibody responses.
Vitamin B6 is also beneficial for the immune system. Deficiency of this essential vitamin might suppress immune response. This B vitamin plays an important role in maturation of lymphocytes. Spinach, turnip green, bell pepper, cabbage, mushroom, broccoli, garlic, banana and fish are good sources of vitamin B6
Spending some time in the sun might help to reduce the risk of infectious diseases and cancer by boosting the vitamin D level in the body. Cancer patients usually suffer from vitamin D deficiency, which indicates a positive role of the sunshine vitamin in boosting the function of the immune system. Exposing the skin to the sunlight triggers synthesis of vitamin D naturally. This essential vitamin occurs naturally in few foods such as salmon, sardine, cod, shrimp, egg, cow’s milk and shiitake mushroom.
Zinc is an antioxidant mineral that is beneficial for the immune system. It is found in oyster, seafood, poultry, red meat, whole grains, nuts, beans and dairy. Selenium is another mineral needed for sustaining the normal activities of the immune cells. It is found grains, seafood, nuts, poultry and meat.
Besides the antioxidant vitamins and minerals, you can improve immunity by consuming fruits and vegetables containing antioxidant phytochemicals.
Your lifestyle affects your entire health, including your immune system. Smoking and heavy drinking might impair immune function. Obesity, high blood cholesterol and hypertension might make you susceptible to illnesses.
Moderate physical activities might help to improve immunity. However, intense physical activities might increase the risk of infections. Although scientists have observed some changes in the components of the immune system, such as elevated levels of white blood cells and cytokines, following extreme amounts of intensive workouts, the exact association between physical activities and immune function is unclear.
Combating stress might help to improve immunity. Stress tends to reduce immune response. Stress might suppress T cell activities and delay antibody production. Emotional stress during diseases might slow down the healing process.
Poor immune response might be countered with the help of vaccinations.Influenza and pneumonia vaccines could significantly reduce the risk of contracting influenza in the elderly with poor immunity.
